It's one of the oldest Slavonia counties, first mentioned in the 13th century and stretches along the river Drava and the northern slopes of the Slavonian hills. The Virovitica and Podravina county is split on three main towns and the 13 smaller communities. The county centre is Virovitica, situated in the central section of Podravina, under the hill of Bilogora that has been mentioned under different names and where is the Pejacevic castle a protected natural park.
In the 1234 charter awarded by ruler Koloman, it was given the status of a free merchant city near Wereuch. After it had been under the Turks until 1684, while 1745 had been restored and the centre transferred to Osijek.
Virovitica is an town of culture and rich historic heritage with a large number of sights from the past like medieval town Ruzica, monastery of st. Nikola, church of st. Roka many old castles and old ruins.
