Nestled on the shores of the Adriatic Sea is the majestic Republic of Croatia. Known for its beauty, Croatia has ten Nature Parks that are known for their landscape, historic ecological beauty and educational information. They are National treasures and have great international significance as well. The Nature Parks are spread all over this country that borders Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also shares the Gulf of Trieste with Italy.
Biokovo Mountain is part of the Dinaric Alps that are spread through Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the only section of the Alps that is close to the sea. It is the highest mountain in Dalmatia as well as the largest. Its highest point is 1762 m, but it has sixteen different peaks that are higher then 1400m. The position of mountain brings a continental and Mediterranean climate to the area. The view from the mountain is spectacular and at times Mount Gargano in Italy can be seen. People commonly use bikes and cars to enjoy its natural beauty, but walking is also an adventure as well.
The park known as Kopacki Rit is located in the Eastern part of Croatia. It is filled with rare birds, swamps and exotic vegetation. The park has been labeled a zoological reserve because of the diverse wildlife that lives there. There is over two hundred and fifty bird species, geese, duck, storks, deer and many other life forms. It is also one of the largest preserved wetlands in Europe.
The beautiful nature park of Lonjsko Polje is located on a flood plain along the Lonja River and it is home to an extensive variety of flora and fauna. Wild ducks use its woodlands as nesting areas, and eagles, egrets, black storks and gray heron also call it home. It is one of Europe’s largest hatching grounds for pike. The park is filled with deer, beavers, wild cats and wild boar.
The popular tourist mountain called Medvednica close to the capital of Croatia is 1032m high. Back packers and walkers enjoy it in the summer and in winter it is a popular ski slope. Nearby is the restore mediaeval compound known as Medvedgrad and the ruins of Susedgrad can be found there as well.
The bay on the south side of the Adriatic Sea is another nature park called Telascica and it is an extension of the Kornati islands. It consists of a number of small bays and it extends to the small islands of Donji and Gornji Skolj.
The untamed mountain ridge called Sjeverni Velebit contains over 2000 sq.km of limestone mass. It is a great spot for those who want to explore and see a wonderful view of the Adriatic. The limestone has weathered over the years and has created fantastic gorges, incredible cliffs, caves and sinkholes.
Ucka is another Nature Park located on the largest peninsula in Croatia. It is a long mountain and its highest peak is 1400m. Ucka has a diverse mixture of animal and plant life. The villages of Vela and Mala Ucka are 900m high and are active cattle and farm communities.
The beech and chestnut forest of Zumberak, a hilly region near the capital city of Zagorje is 300 sq. km filled with caves and underground streams. It is located in a rural area where farming is the main activity. It is another Nature Park filled with the trails and paths which makes hiking a major attraction in the area.
Papuk Mountain another Nature park is located in the eastern region of Croatia. Its spring water and nature trails attract people from all over the area. Backpackers and walkers search the area and discover the beauty of the oak and beach trees and its lush vegetation.
The largest lake in Croatia, Vransko Jezero is last on the list, but it is by no means something to miss. Fishing, bird watching and just relaxing are some of the features the tourists and locals enjoy. There is a campsite in the woods nearby and it is used for holidays and fishing trips.
Croatia with all it natural beauty is treasure in Europe. Spending time with nature in Croatia is a trip worth taking. We all could use some of that treasure.
