Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes, Travel Guide with travel tips for holidays in Plitivce Lakes, Croatia

Croatia holds many treasures. One of which is Plitvice Lakes National Park. This particular area has gone through the hands of many settlers. The Turks, the Slavs, the Ottomans, the Austrians, the Croats, and the Serbs have inhabited it at different times in its history. Many ethnic groups can trace their heritage through this remarkable location. With the resolution of the Croatian War in 1995, the park was moved into a protected status by being enrolled on UNESCO’s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) “List of World Heritage in Danger.” The Croatian government committed itself to restore the park to its original, natural condition. Three years later, Plitvice Lakes National Park was successfully removed from that list.

Plitvice Lakes National Park’s beauty is second to none. Located near the Bosnia and Herzegovina border, the park houses sixteen lakes surrounded by the breathtaking Croatian mountains. There are upper lakes and lower lakes created from the runoff that are famous for their unique colors. The park also showcases its natural waterfalls and caves.

The park is home to many different species of animal, some of which are very rare. The elusive and endangered European Brown Bear along with the wolf and lynx make the park their habitat. There are a wide variety of rare birds, as well, within the park’s territory. The park’s thick forests and abundant water supply attract many animals to traverse through its borders.

Within Plitvice and the surrounding countryside, there are several hotels and many private homes renting out rooms to area visitors. Campsites with bungalows are also available. There is a restaurant conveniently located within the campground. There are three main restaurants on the park grounds and many smaller places for travelers to refresh themselves. Various organized tours are available on shuttle bus or by electric boat. Tours are available in English, German, Italian, and Spanish.

A one-day or extended stay ticket is to be purchased at the entrance gate. Rates vary due to season. November through March is the off-season and consequently is less expensive. Adult tickets are 70 or 110 kuna depending on the season. Children ages 7-18 are 40 or 55 kuna. Children under 7 are free. There are discounted group rates for parties of 15 people or more for 60 or 95 kuna. For a guided tour, there is a requirement of 4 hours at 700 kuna per hour.

This delightful, inspiring park has been an alluring spot for naturists and adventurers around the globe. It is nestled in between mountains on the Plitvice Plateau, two hours from the Croatian capital Zagreb. There are several travel options to the park. Buses, taxis, or Rent-a-Car options are available for travelers from major cities.
