Krka Falls

Krka Falls, Travel Guide with travel tips for holidays in Krka Falls, Croatia

National Park Krka Falls, established in 1985, located in Dalmatia, Croatia, might as well have been named one of the top ten wonders of the world. This park is truly a paradise. Amid the limestone mountains is a beautiful canyon that has been carved out by the River Krka, and the waterfalls are surrounded by dense vegetation. The waterfalls alone are reason enough make a special trip here. The two most well known waterfalls, Roski and Skradinski buk are accessible year round.

The most breathtaking water falls, Skradinski Buk, can be seen by taking a leisurely walk through the forest on a wooden walkway. Here you can observe different species of fish and birds, making this a treasured part of the country. The water is crystal clear, and the quaint little fishing villages add to the scenery.

The River Krka turns into Lake Visovac beyond Roski Falls, and here there is a small islet called Visovac where the lake got it's name. On this small islet is a church and Franciscan monastery that were built by the Nomads in the 14th century. After you leave Visovac, make your way to Sibenik to take in some more historic sights; The Saint Jacob Cathedral, and Rector's Palace are not to missed. There are many Renaissance and Gothic structures here, enough wonder to captivate you for a good part of the day.

Krka National Park's landscape has been formed over thousands of years, and is continuing it's metamorphosis by the Krka River which winds through gorges and rapids. There are many cascades and caverns to be explored here, and rich Mediterranean flora and fauna. The forest in the park consists of many different kinds of trees, including cypress, oak, will and poplar, and over 200 bird species can be found here, including golden eagles.

The waterfalls on Prukljansko Lake were used in the generation of electric power. In 1898 the first hydro-electric power plant was constructed, and a second one was constructed in 1906, near the Manojlovac waterall.

There are several companies offering organized tours of the park, which will take you by boat to the waterfalls. From Skradin it's a short boat ride to Skradinski Buk. You can also visit the park by car or tour bus. From the entrance in Lozovac, a bus will take you to Skradinski Buk. From Skradinski Buk only two boats will take you further up to Roski Slap or Lake Visovac. From Sibenik on the Dalmatian coast it is a half hour drive, and there are also buses that travel daily from Sibenik. You can purchase tickets from travel agencies in Sibenik and Zadar if you prefer to take a tour by bus. Ticket prices for entrance to the park run anywhere from 25 to 80kn, and for children 7-14 years of age from 15 to 65kn.
