Senj is an town loca
ted between the sea, the Kapela mountainside and Velebit. It is area with about 80 long coastline with plenty of coves and beutiful beaches. Up above is Velebit, the highest and the most beautiful Croatian mountain.
The town of Senj is the oldest town in the Norhtern Adriatic and has very rich history that is visible in large number of monuments and other cultural sights.
This picturesque town has very good trafic connections, by sea is connected with most of Croatian cities and Mediterranean countries while by road it is connected with the hinterlend over the notch Vratnik with the Vinodol valley, Rijeka, Zadar, Split and Dalmatia in the south.
History

The Illyrians are the establishers of most of the towns on these spaces so Senj is also one of those cities. Japodes are the first who colonized Senj and started to build forts on the hills around the theseday's Senj. After the Japodes Senj fall under the rule of Liburnians and got the name Senia. In the middle ages the Croats built Senj on the ruins of an ancient town Senia. In 12th century Senj was under the reign of ruling family Frankopan and it starts to develope and gets the importance again 'til the 19th century when the railroad Karlovac - Rijeka was built. Also, at the end of the World War II Senj was distoreyed and people moved to other towns. People started to came back to their homes and decided to use the cultural haritage that has left here. Today Senj is the main stop for all those who travel trough the Adriatic highway and also a town that survived the past and rised again in the 21st century.
In 16th century near Senj was built the fort Nehaj. In the past served for the defence from Turks and today is the main attraction of the city. The fort has a shape of cube and each corner is turned to one side of the world. From the top of the fort you can have a beautiful view on the Croatian littoral and islands Rab, Goli Otok, Prvić, Cres, Krk and also the mountains of Gorski kotar.

Art
The Summer Carnival is held every year in August in Senj and last for 4 days. That is when a big masked parade passes trough the town and people from all over the Croatia and Europe join to this festival.
Museums
The city museum is placed in the Gothic-Reinassance palace of family Vukasović. It keeps an archeological collection, numismatic collection, the collection of glagolitic and glagolitic typography, the collection of weapon, the collection of newer history of Senj and ethnographic collection.
