Novi Vinodolski sits prettily amid a chain of coastal resorts and beaches, surrounded by crystal blue waters along the Kvarner coast. Sandwiched between Crikvenica to the north and Smokvica to the south, Novi Vinodolski developed along the seashore of the northern Croatian coast on the Riviera of Novi Vinodolski from the ancient fortress of Novi Grad. The name Novi Vinodolski comes from the nearby Vinodol Channel. Up until 1953, it was simply called 'Novi.'
Novi Vinodolski was the political and cultural core of it's time, and was inundated with writers from the Mazuranic family. In the late 1800's, it became known as the tourist tradition of it's seaside region. The architectural red roofs and white facades dot this seaside town from sealevel to the old town church on the hill, along with the brisk mountain air and dense forests, acclaiming the sweeping panorama to its famous notch in the tourism industry.
Not to be missed during your stay here, is a visit to the Frankopan citadel, the local museum, gallery and library, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, the Friar's Monastery, the Mazuranic house and St. Marin. The walls of the Roman Fortress still stand there today, so make sure you take in all the architectural wonders of Novi Vinodolski. If water sports is more your style, there are plenty of water activities including swimming, saunas, and boating, or simply relaxing on the beach. The climate in this part of Croatia is perfect year round. And for the more adventurous, there are several beautiful hiking trails, along the coast and through the forested hills, with panoramic views of the town below.
Be sure to check with your travel agent before you make your reservations, as there are usually festivals, musical performances and concerts at certain times of the year. The Vinodol Summer Evenings festival runs from the beginning of July to the end of August, where performances of classical, ethnic, folk and popular music are featured. The Rose of Vinodol (Ruzica Vinodola) which runs in August, celebrates the local grape harvest, and the most properous grape picker in Novi Vinodolski. This festival provides wine tasting, workshops, fairs and music. Novi Vinodolski was an official nominee for the Golden flower of Europe 2008, and was celebrated as one of the 12 most attractive settlements in Europe.
For a taste of the nightlife in Novi Vinodolski, head to the Captain's Club or the Harley Davidson Pub in the harbor of Novi. After a hectic day of sightseeing, there's nothing like a cold Karlovacko to rejuvenate your spirit. Then a walk on the beach to cap off your evening would make a nice ending for a perfect day.
Accomodations range from classic hotels, to modern villages, camping sites, bungalows and even rooms to rent in private houses, with every budget in mind. Many of the places of lodging offer everything from a stunning view of the beach, to the heights of the forested hillside. Local restaurants offer anything from traditional cuisine to seafood, you're sure to find whatever it is you're craving. In this idealic, authentic folklore town, there is something for everyone.
There are no direct flights or ferries to Novi Vinodolski, so your best bet is by car or bus from Rijeka. If you're flying in to Krk Island, they offer transfers to Novi Vinodolski.
