In 1918 at the close of World War I, Croatia joined with Serbia and Yugoslavia, being ruled by the Serbian Royal family. Today Croatia is a parliamentary democracy under its own rule.

History

Buje is rich in history and culture, preserving its old world architecture of stone fortifications and gothic palaces. For a great sightseeing tour, visit St. Servelus church, featuring 15th century wooden statues and Venetian architecture. Buje is also well known for its great climate and has become the center for winemaking in Croatia. There are many wine cellars and taverns in the region in which to sample the local wines, as well as several delightful restaurants that will provide you with fantastic local fare.

The area around Buje is ideal for taking a leisurely bike ride and enjoying the scenery, or if you prefer, it offers some great mountain hiking trails. The hillsides are filled with the local flora and fauna as well as exciting caves and caverns for exploration. If you are into water-sports, Buje lies within a few miles of the Mediterranean coastline and offers rentals on canoes, surf boards and boats, among other activities.
