These pirates built fortress and walls which enabled them to defend the town from all attackers; it was not until the mid-1400's that Venice captured the ancient town.

Today, Omis celebrates its cultural heritage with a series of festivals and outdoor performances. The best-known of these is the Festival of the Dalmatian Klapas. The Klapas are harmony-singing groups which perform traditional songs derived from medieval hymns, adopted and sung by peasants and fisherman. These performances are a vital part of Dalmatian culture.
