The Medimurje county is the smallest and the most northern Croatian county, located between the rivers Mura and Drava. Until recently those two rivers flooded the arable land, woodland and settled areas, but in the 1710 flood, the river Drava changed its flow, so that Legrad became a part of Podravina.
Cakovec is the main town and center of the county, it received its name from the noble family Cak. The closest cities are Varaždin, Koprivnica, Nagykanizsa, Murska Sobota, Bjelovar, Maribor, and Graz, in all three states.
The county borders with Hungary on the east and in part to the north where are the border crossings Kotoriba and Goricani, while on the west it borders with Slovenia, where are the border crossings Mursko Sredisce, Bukovje, Strigovi and Trnovec.
