The Bjelovar-Bilogora county is situated in the central part of Croatia. The most important city of the county is Bjelovar. The other important cities of the county are: Daruvar, Garešnica, Čazma e Grubišno Polje. The city of Bjelovar was first mentioned in the 15th century. The historical heritage of this area is very interesting, as tihs area was the venue of many great battlesagainst the Mongolians, the Tartars and Turks. Many battles occured in the era known as the Vojna Krajina. Thus the ruler Maria Therese, for strategic reasons, decided to start developing the city of Bjelovar, which later became the centre of today's county. The city developed alongside the battles against the Turks. In 1847 Bjelovar was proclaimed indipendent royal city.
The town of Daruvar is well known for its spas, that were used since the Roman era. Due to the historical heritage, this area is well known for it's archaeological findings. The ancient name of the area was Aquae Balissae. With the arrival of the Croatian people at the end of the 6th century, the Probatica settlement was founded, later renamed to Podborje. Daruvar was given its current name in 1765.
The economy of the Bjelovar and Bilogora County is based on agriculture. The factors which allow the development of the base of the economy - agriculture, are the fertile plains along the river of Česma and Ilova. Known for it's rich supplies of natural resources such as oil, gas and termal waters the Bjelovar and Bilogora county stands out among the other counties of Central Croatia.
