Pag is situated in northern part of Adriatic Sea, on the coast of Croatia. It is the fifth island on the Croatian coast by size , the one with the longest coastline. This island has the crude rocky surface alike the surface of the moon meshes with some of green olive and fig groves that impress visitors.

ImageThis beutiful island is full of mysterious coves, large sany beaches and clear sea with major places like Lun, Stara Novalja, Novalja, Gajac, Kolan, Mandre, Šimuni, Metajna, Pag, Dinjiška, Valšiči and Povljana that are connected by a road and a 300m-long arch bridge while mainland connection is a ferry.

Vine vegetables, fruit, olives are grown in the valleys and fields and it is main occupation besides tourism for people in here.  

The island is administratively divided in a northern part which belongs to the Lika-Senj county and a southern part which belongs to the Zadar county but touristic it is part of Kvarner bay. The city of Pag is the center of a northern Dalmatian island and the center of this island as well, known for Pag lace and excellent goat cheese that has developed into the beautiful center with towers and fortresses protecting its rich cultural heritage.


 

The Island of Pag History and Culture

Many remains such as paintings and grawes that were found on the island testify that the first inhabitants came on this spaces in Neolitic. The Romans left the ruins of their villas and on the entire island you can find an ancient objects and in the sea there are amphorae that shows how many different nations lived here trough the history. Trough the 5th and 6th century were built three basilicas during the activity of christian community. The Croats started to colonize the island in 7th century. The battle for this island started in 12th century between the Croats and Venice, and continued trough the times of Napoleon's France and wars, World War I, the Italian occupation, World War II. All those historical events left the Island of Pag and other Croatian spaces devastated. As the years passed by Pag started to recover. All houses and buildings were reconstructed and the entire island devoted to the tourism. The european tourists discovered its beautiful beaches, Mediterranean nature and vegetation, clean enviroment and sea and started to come to a new-opened hotels and apartments. Today Pag is one of the main touristic destinations in Croatia.

The warehouse of salt is the unique monument placed between settlement Vodice and Prosika.

The medicinal mud is the island's attraction and it is attested that helps in healing reumatich diseases and skin affections.

In 14th century was established the Romanesque church of St. Martin that had in the past a geat importance.

Also there is a so called "The triangle of Pag". That is a recession in the land that has proportions 32x32x22 meters. Many scientist connect this phenomen with the UFO.

The most popular cultural and entertainment events are the celebration of "Velika Gospa" on August 15 and the summer carnival. There are private galleries and ateliers in the Novalja, Stara Novalja and other settlements on the island.

The Island of Pag Museums

The city museum in Novalja is also an entrance into an old underground aqueduct that was built before the Christ. Its feature is that it was carved in the rocks and it is long 1042 m and wide about 60 m. In the museum the visitors can also see an interesting collection of photos of an ancient amphorae, which are located in the bay Vlaška mala on the 27 m under the sea surface. The museum also keeps a collection of an antique culture and  the collection of UFO-ology.

The Island of Pag Nightlife

During the summer Pag becomes an island that never sleeps. On the waterfront in Novalja are coffee bars and clubs placed one next to enother and they are always crowded. The beach Zrće is the most beutiful and the most attractive beach on the island. That is a pebbly beach where parties last 24/7 in the beach clubs Aquarius, Calypso, Papaya and other smaller clubs and world-known DJ's come to entertain the tourists.
