Crikvenica is situated in the Kvarner bay, 33 km from Rijeka on the Adriatic Sea and it is a major point at the centre of the district of Primorje and Gorski kotar. On the island Krk is located airport Rijeka that is connected with a Central Europe which have contributed to the early development of tourism in Crikvenica that have tradition of more than one hundred years.
The town of Crikvenica spreads on the 26square kilometers in the coastal zone and is squeezed between the sea and the littoral reef of an average height above sea, about 300 m.
The town of Crikvenica is an riviera for itself with a lot of small tourist resorts that are almost connected like Selce, Crikvenica, Dramalj and Jadranovo.
These settlements has a quality of accomodations, plenty sport and recreation programs and an attractive tourism offer.
The founder of today's Crikvenica is Nikola IV. Frankapan who built the Monastery for monks of St. Paul Hermit at the mouth of river Dubračina into the sea. The monastery building had connect the surrounding fishing villages and became the center of public and cultural life. Today the monastery is a hotel Kaštel. The Romans left their traces on many places but the most of them were found in Selce (traces of water), Jadranovo (the remains of late antique villa) and in Crikvenica. Through the 17th and 18th century various Austrian Chambers administration ruled this spaces. in 19th century Crikvenica becomes an administrative and judicial center of Vinodol and since 1875 Crikvenica and Selce are independent municipalitys. Until the Worl War II Crikvenica was one of the strongest fishing resorts on the Adriatic.
At the end of the 19th century begins to develop tourism. The tourism has started when Crikvenica got its first bathing in 1888. First tourists began visiting Crikvenica and other places of the Riviera and that encouraged the construction of hotels, beaches, country villas and the parks and promenades.
Already in 14th century there was a small church of St. Mary that was reconstructed in 15th century by the family Frankopan. Next to it was built monastery which is inhabited by Pavlins. The Church has a Gothic sanctuary, and the Baroque ship was upgrated later. In 1893 was built the hotel Therapy by the architect S. Höfler.
At the site of the Romanesque church of St. Anton, destroyed in 1933, ws built the enother one with the same name in Neo Romanesque style.
In the immediate vicinity of Crikvenica is located a place Dramalj, where you can see the old mill to grind olives, which is no longer used but it is special and evidence of the tradition of olive growing in this part of the Adriatic.
Crikvenica is famous for its numerous health resorts and one of them is Thalassotherapy. It is the first built hotel where many celebrities were healing, and it is the right choice for all those who have problems with the respiratory organs.
Crikvenica Aquarium is located in the center, with 24 pools in which live more than 150 species of the Adriatic and tropical fish. There is one gallery - The City Gallery of Crikvenica.
The Day of the City Crikvenica is celebrated on 14th August.
National Museum and Gallery in Novi Vinodolski is located in the house Mrzljak. Due to the needs of the enlargement of exhibition space in 1973. The National Museum moved to II. floor in the Frankopan castle and in tower Turnac. It possesses an interesting and diverse documentation, library and photograph, which represents a source of interesting data about the life and work in the area of this city.
In Crikvenica you can have fun in different ways, starting with local entertainment on the beaches, to the whole night entertainment in bars or clubs. Disco clubs are Phoenix, Flash and Retro and coffee bars where you can go out are Luka, Delfin, Roni, Leut, Bič Klub, Point...
